Part of our Teen Leadership initiative, Girls Give Back is a unique program for girls in grades 9-12.
With the mentorship of JFS staff and community leaders, participants learn about issues of gender equity and social justice, sharpen leadership skills, run an advocacy blog, spread awareness on social media, and develop projects to improve the community. Girls Give Back is a place to find your voice—and be a voice for others.
“Girls Give Back is the most amazing program I’ve ever participated in. I learned valuable leadership skills and feel more confident in myself. And I learned about issues that women face all over the world.”
We Get Informed
Participants attend workshops and trainings on a variety of topics related to social justice. Past learning experiences have included an anti-bias training with ADL San Diego, a workshop focused on mental health, and a Teen Activism Conference.
GGB contributes hundreds of service hours each year to support local causes, including Project Sarah, the Balboa Avenue Older Adult Center, and the Hand Up Food Pantry at JFS. Past participants have earned the President’s Silver Volunteer Service award for their commitment to community service.
We Speak Out
Participants contribute to the GGB-run blog, EqualTalk, and have started a social media hashtag, #FeministFriday, to celebrate the accomplishments of women, past and present, from around the globe.
We Create Change
GGB teens work alongside JFS staff to run a girls’ empowerment program, Junior Leaders, for Jewish middle schoolers. GGB also partners with advocacy groups like the International Rescue Council, Surfrider Foundation, Coastal Roots Farm, and local women’s shelters to serve and strengthen our community.
Girls Give Back runs from September through June. If you’re ready to tackle the issues facing women and girls around the globe, we invite you to complete an application for the next school year.
We’re here to answer your questions and help you get started.
