Olympian Suzy Favor Hamilton to Deliver Keynote on Living with Bipolar Disorder at Jewish Family Service May 15 Luncheon

Jewish Family Service of San Diego’s (JFS) annual luncheon to support mental health awareness on Monday, May 15, 2017 at 11:00am at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla, will feature three-time Olympian Suzy Favor Hamilton, sharing her experience of living with bipolar disorder.

At the event held by JFS’s Behavioral Health Committee, Favor Hamilton will describe her tumultuous journey with bipolar disorder from Olympic runner, to Las Vegas escort, to dedicated mental health advocate. Today, the author of the bestselling memoir “Fast Girl: A Life Spent Running from Madness” is a sought-after speaker at mental health conferences around the country, working to raise awareness, encourage understanding and offer hope to those who are coping with their own challenges.

“It is a goal of our Behavioral Health Committee to destigmatize mental illness in any form. Too often we learn that someone has not sought treatment for whatever reason. It is my hope that through events like hosting Suzy Favor Hamilton, we increase the openness, transparency, and understanding around mental illness. Favor Hamilton will offer great insight on how family and friends can serve as partners along the path to healing,” said JFS CEO Michael Hopkins.

The luncheon will also pay a special tribute to the memory of Elaine Moser, a long-time mental health activist and JFS Behavior Health Committee member. Registration for the event will begin at 11 a.m. with the program following until 1:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $50 through May 1 and for $60 thereafter, with funds helping to eliminate the stigma of mental illness through education and outreach.
