JFS Receives Nearly 1,500 Pounds of Smart Chicken from Jimbo’s Grocery to Fight Hunger in San Diego

Through Holiday “Smart Giving, Smart Chicken” Program, Poultry Donated to Help San Diego’s Food Insecure.

SAN DIEGO (Feb. 11, 2019) – On Friday, Feb. 8, Jewish Family Service of San Diego (JFS) received more than 1,490 pounds of fresh chicken from Jimbo’s…Naturally! and Smart Chicken to share with food insecure families, older adults and military personnel in San Diego County.

JFS partnered with Smart Chicken and Jimbo’s, a natural grocer, for a holiday giving challenge – the “Smart Giving, Smart Chicken Program,” focused on providing nourishing meals to San Diegans in need. In the spirit of the holidays, Smart Chicken – a U.S. purveyor of high-quality chicken – pledged to donate one pound of chicken for every 10 pounds of chicken sold at Jimbo’s locations in November 2018 to JFS. Jimbo’s customers purchased 14,930 pounds of chicken during the challenge.

“This is a tremendous outcome, and we are so grateful to Jimbo’s and Smart Chicken for their generous support,” said JFS CEO Michael Hopkins. “With more than 460,000 people struggling with hunger in San Diego County, this donation plays a vital role in reducing the uncertainty many face when finding their next meal. This donation will help supplement over 5,500 nutritional meals for San Diegans accessing our Hand Up Food Pantry and Corner Market.”

Approximately one in six San Diegans live in homes without enough food and one in five children in San Diego struggle with hunger. To help fight food insecurity in San Diego, the JFS Hand Up Food Pantry provides supplemental, nutritious food to more than 2,000 individuals, totaling up to 300,000 meals annually. The program also runs JFS’s Corner Market, a client-choice food pantry where clients “shop” for the items they need.

This is the 16th consecutive years Jimbo’s and Smart Chicken have partnered to help feed those in need during the holidays.
