Teen Leadership Application Info

Girls Give Back and Hand Up Teen Leaders recently joined forces to create one all-encompassing Teen Leadership Program. Teens in grades 9-12 from across San Diego are invited to apply for the 2019-2020 school year!

By participating in JFS Teen Leadership you will gain valuable leadership skills, learn how to make lasting change in your community on issues that matter to you most, develop new relationships with like-minded peers, and strive to earn service awards that strengthen your resumes and college applications.

Teen Leadership Requirements

  • Attend bi-monthly leadership meetings
  • Volunteer with JFS at least 3 times during the program year
  • Complete at least 2 donation drives to benefit JFS, one of which must be a food drive
  • Present or arrange a presentation at your school or other community group
  • Work with a small group to create a project to benefit your community
    • Groups will be made based on collective topic interest
    • Meetings in the second half of the year will be dedicated to this

To be eligible for service awards and hour verification letters, participants are expected to:

  • Fulfill the above requirements
  • Have no more than 5 absences throughout the program year


Meeting Dates

Meetings will take place at Jewish Family Service on Sunday afternoons unless otherwise noted. Some of the community events may begin in the morning.

Application to the program does not guarantee acceptance.

Upon submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation email, and if considered for the next stage, will be contacted for a short interview. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis.

Teens will be notified of their acceptance by mid-August.

If accepted to the program, there is a $300 non-refundable program fee for participating. Financial assistance is available upon request. Fees are used to cover all program expenses including:

  • Program supplies for monthly meetings and projects
  • Food and drink for all program events
  • Program T-shirt
  • Awards and certificates for the year-end event

Executive Leadership Board

The deadline for Executive Leadership Board has passed.

Teens interested in having an additional leadership role can apply to be on the Executive Leadership Board (ELB). This group will have additional meetings and leadership development training and will be responsible for helping to plan and facilitate program-wide events and individual projects such as volunteering, donation drives, and outreach opportunities. Meetings times will be determined by the group but will occur once per month September – May either before or after already scheduled Sunday meetings, on a weekday evening, or as a video meeting. Accepted ELB members who are available will get together on August 14 from 1-4 pm and August 18 from 10 am – 2 pm to help plan for the upcoming program year.

Specific positions and roles will be determined based on interest, individual skillset, and projects the group decides on. Some tasks of the Executive Leadership Board will include:

  • Make announcements at meetings
  • Plan social events
  • Communicate with JFS program staff as needed for projects
  • Take and input attendance from meetings/events
  • Find and notify group about volunteer opportunities in the community
  • Assist group with using online platform for volunteering and tracking hours
  • Recap event/meeting minutes
  • Develop relationships with community partners
  • Monitor Social Media account
  • Coordinate donation drives for group
  • Create flyers
  • Keep track of donation drive numbers (items collected)
  • Monitor volunteer hours for group
  • Help arrange (sometimes do) community presentations
  • Keep track of completed presentations

For teens interested in the ELB, there is a deadline of July 16, 2019.
