What Is the Role of Compassion In Social Change? What Is Our Responsibility?

In today’s world, where challenges often seem insurmountable, the need for strength of character rooted in empathy, integrity, and kindness is essential for creating a more just and harmonious society. How do we, as individuals, and a community, embody these attributes even when it’s hard and even when it feels impossible?

Join us for the Center for Jewish Care Luncheon on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 with Rabbi Shmuly in conversation with CEO Michael Hopkins. Together, we will explore the centrality of compassion in Jewish thought and how this core value can serve as a catalyst for social transformation. Drawing from ancient texts, contemporary case studies, and his own experiences as a social activist, Rabbi Shmuly will illustrate how acts of compassion can bridge divides, heal communities, and drive systemic change.

Rabbi Shmuly, a global social justice activist and educator is committed to improving our communities through Torah learning, social action, and leadership development. His writings have appeared in outlets including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, and the Atlantic, among many other secular and religious publications. He has also served as a rabbinic representative, facilitator, and speaker at the World Economic Forum in Geneva and Davos. Rabbi Shmuly’s religious journey was filmed for the Independent Lens/PBS documentary “The Calling.”

Join Us As An Underwriter

As a community leader, we invite you to deepen your impact by joining us as an event underwriter. The Center for Jewish Care at JFS is a vital lifeline for San Diego’s Jewish community. Every year, thousands of Jewish San Diegans receive critical services and meaningful support from the Center, including compassionate care and resource coordination for Holocaust Survivors living in San Diego and Orange Counties and their families. Through basic needs assistance, financial assistance, housing navigation, mental health coordination, and spiritual support, the Center connects Jewish San Diegans to a caring community and wraparound support that helps them stabilize, move forward, and thrive.

As a home for tikkun olam (repairing the world), the Center for Jewish Care also offers opportunities for engagement and volunteerism. Your philanthropic investment will empower Jewish San Diegans and provide support for the emerging needs of our Jewish community as well as support the greater San Diego community.
